I don't know much about this subject but I do remember that there are waves in the first Russian mission. If you open that mission using the editor and look at the map preferences (shortkey Ctrl+j), you will notice that there is something about some waves requested and some wave colors in the window's right side. Try experimenting with those numbers.
And by the way: I am not sure if the map must have a GBI to make waves work (http://wiki.owsupport.com/index.php?title=Grndsec)

At least, now your post is refreshed so more skilled people may notice it :)

Sorry I have no idea how to make water_anim.bmp

You have to follow the guide carefully - even if it sounds weird. When you have exported your water heightmap you have to import it again (after you have imported Water Animation) and THEN Export Water Image as Bin.

Concerning the sounds clips for waterfalls and how to get them to work, they are all found here: Data2\Effects\Nature . The folder "vodopad" contains some waterfall sounds.
To implement this into your map, you have to create an area and name it

Code:
#SND#{Sound path}

"Sound path" is the path of the sound file in extension of Data2\Effects\Nature . For instance:

Code:
#SND#vodopad\maly.wav

This is sound for waterfall.
When the player gets near the area the sound is played louder and louder.

I don't see how you can't make a bitmap. There is one supplied with the example topic Gothuk posted.

I just haven't got any idea where to start. Is it as simple as exporting the water image, loading it into a picture manipulation program (Photoshop, GIMP etc.), add the "red lines" and save it as a 8 bit BMP?

Its just a bitmap. As long as its the same size as the GBI then there should be no problem. I don't see how its amazingly hard. You could just "Try" things, that how i learn OW Stuff.
