In campaign you can define character in two ways:
a) using SAIL
b) using Start.txt

Now I will show how to use the Start.txt:

Start.txt is placed in Data1.owp (Campaigns/SIDE/Start.txt). In this file there are defined characters that appear in campaign. For example we want to create a new character.

1) change the number of CHARACTERS (for example now there are 3 characters and you want to create one more you have to change the number to 4)
2) define character:
example:
-macmillan
Code:
  JMM 1  // JMM - name used in SAIL  1 - defines that it's a human
    DEFINE
NAME Macmillan  // real name in the game *e
      HUMAN 1 1 1  // *a *b *c
      ATTR 11 11  // stamina and speed
      SKILLS 3 2195 0 4582 0 24838 1 16776  // skills levels and experience points***
LAST_MISSION 1  // last mission you will use defined character
CHAR @ 110 0  // change the first number higher than 100 to make character highlighted
RANDSEED 0 // you can keep this line or completely remove it
VOICE 101 GALLERY us 5  // voice to use in editor, gallery name and the number of picture
    END_OF_DEFINE

*a: sex: 1-male 2-female
*b: profession: 1-soldier 2-engineer 3-mechanic 4-scientist 5-sniper 8-mortar 9-bazooker 11-desert warrior *d
*c: nation: 1-american 2-arabian 3-russian
*d: desert warrior have to be arabian
*e: it can be also an identifier to a name defined in Texts\CharName.wri (data1.owp) (especially useful when making multiplayer mod)

***NOTE:Experience points in start.txt = 30 * experience points in campaign or 10 * experience points in multiplayer.

----------------------------------------

Polish:

W kampanii możemy zdefiniować postać na dwa sposoby:
a) poprzez SAIL

    DEFINE
NAME Macmillan  // prawdziwa nazwa w grze *e
      HUMAN 1 1 1  // *a *b *c
      ATTR 11 11  // siła i szybkość
      SKILLS 3 2195 0 4582 0 24838 1 16776  // poziomy umiejętności i punkty doświadczenia***
LAST_MISSION 1  // ostatnia misja, w której użyjesz tej postaci
CHAR @ 110 0  // ustaw pierwszą wartość powyżej 100 by podświetlić postać
RANDSEED 0 // możesz zostawić tą linijkę albo pozbyć się jej
VOICE 101 GALLERY us 5  // voice używany w edytorze, nazwa galerii i numer obrazka
    END_OF_DEFINE

*a: płeć: 1-mężczyzna 2-kobieta
*b: profesja: 1-żołnierz 2-inżynier 3-mechanik 4-naukowiec 5-snajper 8-operator moździerza 9-bazookarz 11-wojownik pustyni *d
*c: nacja: 1-amerykanin 2-arab 3-rosjanin

Its proberly possible to have animals pre-defined in start.txt . Tho proberly pointless.

the error appeared because i forgot to change the nation to 0 (nature), now everything is OK
animals are not added to the tutorial because (as Stucuk said) it's pointless to pre-define them in Start.txt
